A multimedia project taking a look at the issue of poor mental health in sport and the stigma surrounding it.
1/4th of the UK population experience a ‘diagnosable’ mental health problem, with an extraordinary amount of people seeking help with their struggles.
In sport, there lies a potentially darker secret. Professional athletes, who may be earning a comfortable wage and a supposed stress-free life, will also be suffering - many of them in an uncomfortable silence.
Clarke Carlisle, Gary Speed, Graeme Fowler, Marcus Trescothick, Robert Enke…the list is seemingly endless. Some of these high-profile names have even resorted to taking their own lives because of their struggles with mental health.
It is an epidemic that needs to be stopped. The time has come to force an irreversible change, and help sportsmen and women to begin to speak openly about their battle to a positive mental wellbeing.
This project will combine written, audio and visual aspects to raise awareness of poor mental health in sport. Keep up to date with progress here and on our Twitter account @whistlestruggle.
